Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater. That seemed to be the message from Archos today when it announced the Gmini XS 202.

An incremental upgrade to the well received Gmini XS 200, the dimensions (7.6 x 5.9 x 1.9cm), weight (120g), media types (MP3, WMA, WAV) and connections (earphones/line out jack) remain the same.

In fact, the big change is largely a practical one with battery life soaring from 10 to 17 hours raising it above both the new Creative Sleek and Apple’s colour iPod line. More disappointingly, the display has not received the full colour upgrade and it keeps its existing 128 x 128 pixel (9 line) resolution.

Functionality remains high with the ability to rename, move, copy, delete files and make playlists on the device and the Gmini XS 202 is compatible with Microsoft’s PlaysForSure subscription services.

No UK pricing is available yet, but it will be 269.99 euros (roughly £185), which puts it on track to be one of the cheapest 20GB players on the market. The square jawed little fella is out this month.
