WinDVD In 7th Heaven

Just last week I mentioned how QuickTime 7 had brought H.264 to the PC. Well, like buses, another programme turns up right behind it to do the same thing.

InterVideo’s WinDVD 7 is, along with CyberLink’s PowerDVD, one of the most ubiquitous pieces of (non-OS supplied) media player software out there: 125m users and counting, bundled with more PC than you can shake a caber at and now it has had a major upgrade.

HDTV and H.264 support are the headlining features of version seven and it still supports playback of Real, QuickTime and Windows Media Player formats, while DivX has also been added for the first time.

Greater sound control (abpve), automatic subtitle checks and customisation (colour and size), an improved video capture tool (QuickClip2) and upgraded Trimension DNM (Digital Natural Motion) playback and time control technology have also been thrown into the mix. Want to watch a two hour movie in 90 minutes without image or sound degradation? InterVideo claims you can do it (could be useful the next time I’m forced to watch a Drew Barrymore movie).

Two versions are out now: WinDVD 7 Gold, the basic playback package which doesn’t include H.264 support – boo, hiss (and when did “Gold” come to mean basic?), and WinDVD 7 Platinum (ah, when “Platinum” became all the rage), the tweakers edition with the full shebang. The former will set you back $49.95 and the latter $69.95 (it’s 95 per cent web downloaded, so UK prices are a straight conversion). Upgrades for current licensed WinDVD users are also available on the site.

Of course, you could probably get it for free by buying a new PC in a couple of months, but methinks that is not the cheapest way to go about it. Fly my pretties, fly!
