Extra Shuffling?

Only Apple could pull off the iPod Shuffle. In essence it is such a ludicrous idea: a tiny player with no screen that plays tracks in random orders. If any other manufacturers had tried it they would’ve been laughed off the shop shelves. Still, the Shuffle has been a massive hit and Apple could be ready to extend the range.

The rumours stem from the fact that Samsung and Toshiba are preparing to accelerate the production of their 8Gb (gigabit) NAND flash chips (also seen recently in the Samsung’s solid state hard drives). Of course, two plus two is not guaranteed to equal four here, especially since the Shuffle only debuted in January.

Any factor to consider is cost. Surely the first 2GB and 4GB flash memory drives are going to be rather expensive and Apple will no doubt be reluctant to see its value-orientated range skyrocket in price. Finally, from a personal point of view, when you start hitting sizes of 4GB and more is it not about time to grow up, get a player with a screen and begin listening to complete albums?

Anyhoo, we remain to be convinced, but it’s the news on the grapevine, so we thought you should know.
