Apple Updates iPod

Apple is expected to announce this week that the iconic iPod is to receive an update. The revelations come in an article for Newsweek magazine in the US.

The new iPod won’t feature any of the more extreme features that many have been predicting such as a colour screen, video support or integrated Wi-Fi. Instead the biggest single improvement is that its battery life has been upped by 50 per cent, taking it up to 12 hours. According to the article, the increased staying power comes from enhanced power management rather than a new battery.

The new units take their design cue from the iPod mini, with a brushed metal click wheel enabling Apple to omit the four buttons that adorn the current 3rd generation model.

Software changes include the ability to manipulate more than one playlist on the iPod itself, and remove as well as add songs from them.

According to Newsweek, the new models will offer great hard disk capacity for the same price as the current line up. Prices for the 40GB model are predicted to be $499 and the 20GB model for £399.

As of writing the new models have yet to appear on the Apple web site and no details on UK prices or release dates have been revealed.
