Spotify Launches 'Libspotify' Open API to Developers

We were excited when the Spotify Open API was announced on Monday - we're positively drooling now... (and not just because of 'Roberta from Spotify')

"Today we are delighted to announce the launch of 'libspotify', our first step in opening up Spotify as a music platform," the company announced on its official blog. "By releasing libspotify we will allow third-party developers to write applications for our service and offer the possibility of creating an exciting new range of features... we hope to empower our users to build upon what we've started and come up with imaginative and innovative new ways of interacting with Spotify. There are hundreds of features that users have suggested to add to Spotify and by taking this step we hope to encourage the developer community to expand our service."

Of course we've already seen Spotify tease us all with a superb iPhone app demo (above) and co-founder Daniel Ek has also name dropped the likes of Logitech, Sonos, Xbox and the PlayStation 3. Personally I'd like to add in any 3G/WiFi enabled handsets, the aforementioned iPhone, Wii (the control system could be awesome), a web app and even dedicated mini players with caching abilities. Car radios?

Caveats? Inevitably yes. Support is initially offered only for Linux on IA-32 and users will only have access to third party Spotify apps if they are Premium subscribers - clever and crafty simultaneously.

This could just work...
