While the Palm Pre has become the first handset in two years to pull the public's attention away from the iPhone we still see Apple's pride and joy is performing brilliantly...

Hitting the Apple homepage is the quite remarkable news that the iPhone App Store has now passed the half billion mark for downloaded applications. A simply stunning achievement (free app proportions or not) for a service launched just seven months ago.

"500 million apps downloaded. And counting," the site proclaims. "There are more than 15,000 apps on the App Store, and so far users have downloaded an incredible 500 million, in every category from games to business".

Yep, Palm you may have blown us away at CES but that's quite the gap to catch up.

In related and less-happy-for-Apple-but-good-for-us news is an announcement from the ever industrious Dev Team that it has followed up its yellowsn0w iPhone 3G unlock with a long awaited jailbreak for the 2G iPod touch.

Dubbed an even more disturbing 'redsn0w', it has yet to be formerly released but a video and selection of screenshots demonstrate the breakthrough has been made. Dev Team warns "Right now the jailbreak process is far too manual to be useful to most people" so there could be a delay for a formal public release. Still, second gen iPod touch owners rest easy - it's coming...

Update: 2G iPod touch jailbreak video now posted.
