One thing that stood out for me at CES this year was the distinct lack of focus on MP3 players and/or PMPs. Creative, SanDisk, Samsung and even iRiver seemed to have their focus on other sectors. Which just left Sony...

To be fair, the newly announced 'X Series' was also given little of the limelight (something that was unashamedly reserved for the P Series netbook) but it could still be enough to give potential iPod touch owners food for thought.

Dubbed the Sony Walkman 'NWZ-X1000 Series' in full, the player features a 3in touchscreen OLED display, integrated noise cancellation technology and WiFi while also coming in Apple combatant 16GB and 32GB capacities. Interestingly, while Sony has somewhat copied the Home button of its primary rival its decision to add physical playback keys to the top could be a stroke of genius for all those who like to carry their devices in a pocket.

Elsewhere you'll also find native YouTube support, an unspecified web browser and its potential Achilles' heel: a mere 12 hours of audio battery life (watch out video). That said, with Sony suggesting we may have to wait up to six months for the X Series to hit store shelves it could once more find itself playing catch up to the improvements made by the likes of Apple in the meantime. Sony also isn't known for its wallet friendly RRPs so we'll treat this with cautious optimism for now.

@Gordon As has been stated previously, the 12 hour battery life would appear to refer to the W series, not the X series:
