It has been fairly heavily reported on the other side of the Atlantic that Apple planned to give free iTunes content away over the Christmas period. Now however we care because the deal has just been confirmed for the UK too...

In a promotion dubbed the '12 Days of Christmas' the company explained with typical hyperbole:

"For 12 Days of Christmas, we've delved deep into our catalogue to pull out some real treats for the holiday season. Check back here every day for rare singles, exclusive live tracks and free music videos from some of the biggest artists in the world today. Plus some classic TV episodes that you just won't want to miss. Consider them little stocking fillers for your new iPod."

Well, that's pretty much it in a nut shell to be honest. The promo runs from 26 December to 6 January and Apple is encouraging interested parties to sign up to email alerts which will - surprise, surprise - alert you to the free content each day. This is probably worth doing however as each offer is only valid for 24 hours. Registering will also enter you into a prize draw to win 1,000 free iTunes tracks - hopefully DRM free ones or really, let's face it, what's the point?

Now please feel free to start your pro/anti-Apple rants...

It's interesting that Apple are doing this after Christmas. I expect they will all be songs that nobody wants to download any way.

@ Orinj, it's probably just to get new customers into the iTunes store after they open their shiny new iPod on Christmas day, just another cynical marketing scheme, but what e... more
