Some consolation here for all of you poor iPod touch owners inexplicably duped out of Street View on your firmware 2.2 updates...

Turns out, despite being the most light weight (physically) of the mobile OS X based bunch the 2G iPod touch is fastest and by a considerable margin.

This rather surprising news has been broken by Touch Arcade who revealed Apple's flagship dedicated PMP had its CPU very quietly boosted to 532MHz - compared to the 412MHz on the iPod touch, iPhone and iPhone 3G - while there could also be increased GPU clock rates in there as well.

This intriguing info comes from an interview the site did with TouchSports Tennis developer Handheld Games Corp. Speaking to its CEO Thomas Fessler, Touch Arcade learnt that the company has been forced to drastically reprogramme its sports sim so it would run consistently on first and second generation iPod touches and iPhones.

"Where we can easily display two 1500 polygon tennis players with 32 bones each on the iPod touch 2G and maintain fast and fluid game play, the original iPod touch just chokes, and in some instances so do the iPhones," explained Fessler who went on to say a reduction to just 800 polygons was required to get the original iPod touch similarly smooth and this approach had yielded "great results."

"Great results" or not however ladies and gentleman, this simply isn't how any supposedly aspiring games platform is meant to operate. It is rule 101, possibly rule #1: provide a consistent, identical hardware platform for developers whether you see yourself as a linguistically retarded "Funnest iPod Ever" or not.

For the record Fessler believes the order of performance across all four mobile OS X devices to be uneven and - from fastest to slowest: iPod Touch 2G (by a long way), iPhone 3G, iPhone then iPod touch 1G.

Could the other models be set to see similar clock boosts in the future? Maybe, but then again could the iPhone 3G battery take a further hit...?

Bad Apple.

If they upgrade the Iphone with a faster chip I might just get one. Then I could process through all the nagging from my wife over the phone much faster.

I may have this wrong, but from my understanding, the iPhone3G has a 620MHz ARM cpu, which is underclocked to +/-400MHz. This said, I don't expect that they will introduce a f... more
