Apple Announces September iPod Event

First there were the iPod touch stock shortages then that was quickly followed by talk of a lanky new nano and now we know when it's all going down...

In a mass email to all US journalists Apple has announced it will be holding an iPod-centric event on 9 September. Simply titled 'Let's Rock', it will kick off at 10am San Francisco time (5PM GMT) and - without getting overly analytical of Apple's slightly wearisome brand of show and tell theatre - the deliberate aspect ratio of the announcement does suggest ultra widescreen nanos may be off the agenda (if they were - considering the iPod touch already has a widescreen aspect ratio - it would surely be reflected in the invite. Or would it?).
Anyhow, what can we expect? Personally I don't predict anything earth shattering. The iPod touch may get a minor redesign to match up with the iPhone 3G's slightly different finish and a larger 64GB capacity may be on the way to further separate it from the iPhone (which will inevitably get a 32GB edition just before or after Christmas). As for the elongated nano it could still arise while the OS will probably get a minor spit and polish but there will be no touchscreen tomfoolery. Oh and a long overdue capacity bump should come to spark a renewed video emphasis (is video the new music?).
All this aside, I'm guessing price cuts will be the major headline this time around. Apple needs to avoid self cannibalisation from the newly subsidised iPhone 3G business model and it has to keep people buying as the Credit Crunch deepens.
Overall excitement rating? I'm going for a 7...
