It is a sign of Sony's Walkman MP3 player woes that one of their staple product lines has become iPod docks, but at least it is something they seem to do rather well...

The launch of the 'S-Airplay' looks set to cement this reputation too as it is one of the most attractive and stylish wireless docks we've seen to date.

The dock itself - the 'S-Airplay' of the title (above left) claims to have a range of up to 50m (over 160 feet) and pairs with up to 10 wireless speakers (called the S-Airs, above right) all of which can operate independently and simultaneously depending on the quality of their signal. The S-Airplay also provides an alarm clock and the option to stream FM radio, but it would've been nice to see DAB instead given the inexpensive offerings available these days.

Speaking of which however at just $400 (approx. £210) the S-Airplay, which comes bundled with two S-Airs (extras are $130 [£70] apiece), will represent rather impressive value for money when it is released in September. So while Apple may have little to worry about from Sony's actual Walkman range, the likes of Sonos and its excellent though expensive wireless digital music systems may not be sitting quite so easily...
