Is This The 4G iPod nano?

As any moderately techy person knows September is the month when Apple traditionally revamps its iPod range and with that now less than a week away the rumour mill has predictably reached top gear...

The iPod nano is the main subject of the chitter chatter this time around and the info comes from sometimes hit but mostly miss source Kevin Rose - the founder of Digg.

According to Rose, the fourth generation iPod nano will revert to its original elongated shape to fit a larger widescreen display which will show video in landscape mode for the first time. It will also be far more rounded (like the back of the iPhone 3G but both sides) and he has produced the render which you see here. This ties with what we're hearing.

Away from the former chubby one (the nano, not Rose) - the original digger also says the iPod touch will feature minor external revisions akin to those made to the iPhone 3G but a 64GB model apparently isn't on the menu yet. That said the touch - as well as the entire iPod line - will see price cuts with the 8GB touch falling to $299. This should help given the potential of the subsidized iPhone 3G to cannibalise iPod sales long term.

Lastly, a 2.1 firmware will be revealed for both touch and iPhone while iTunes 8.0 will appear and bring undisclosed additional functionality (subscription services, anyone?).

In related news Blu-ray support may at last appear with Mac OS X 10.5.6 but given Rose's past record let's just say we'd be pleased if half of this comes off.

Time scale? Further afield for Blu-ray but the iPod changes are due within the next few weeks, allegedly...
