We spotted the Creative Zen X-Fi a short while ago, and some more details, including prospective pricing, have popped up on Impress. The X-Fi brand has generally been reserved for Creative's highest-end audio products, so we expect great things from this Zen. Specs-wise, at least, it looks like we won't be disappointed.

A 2.5in 320 x 240 LCD screen isn't perhaps up to iPod Touch standards, but making up for it the Zen X-Fi one-ups Apple by allowing synching with and audio streaming from a PC over WiFi. 16GB and 32GB models are available but this can be further enhanced with the built-in SDHC card slot. There is also an 8GB model, but this omits wireless.

Video and Audio support is as follows:

Video:

  • 850kb/s WMV
  • 1Mb/s MPEG-4
  • 1MB/s XviD
  • 1MB/s Motion JPEG
Audio:
  • MP3
  • WMA (WM DRM10 supported)
  • AAC (m4a - don't expect iTunes DRM-ed files to work, though)
  • WAV

Creative supplies a software application called "Creative Centrale" which, apparently, will resize and compress video to meet the Zen's capabilities. More interestingly Outlook calendar, to-do list and address book synchronisation is boasted, as well as an FM tuner and a microphone, for recording audio direct to the device.

The Zen X-Fi is charged via USB, with a four-hour charge time giving around 36 hours of continuous music playback, or five hours of video. Still no word on exactly what all those buttons do, though.

Pricing in Japan is set at ¥17,800 (~£84,) ¥22,800 (~£107) and ¥32,800 (~£155) for the 8GB, 16GB and 32GB models respectively. UK release dates and pricing soon please, Creative!
