In recent years SanDisk has been one of the most progressive companies in the tech sector. Like LG and Samsung it has managed to wangle itself into almost every product area thanks in no small part to its giant flash memory background. Today's announcements show standing still isn't on the agenda either.

Yesterday I spoke with SanDisk Director of Product Marketing Jan Hauer who showed off the Sansa Fuze, a player the company hopes will give Apple's nano more than a few sleepless nights.

Happily I can report in person that it does make an excellent first impression with super build quality and a well made scroll wheel. Features are bountiful with a bright 1.9in screen, video and audio playback, FM tuner, inbuilt mic for dictation and microSDHC slot for augmenting capacity. Battery life is super too providing 24 hours and five hours respectively for continuous audio and video playback.

Showing Apple isn't the only company which thinks about its players after sale, SanDisk will also bring a flash update to the Fuze and dinky Clip shortly after release that enables support for audiophile fave FLAC and the under appreciated Ogg. 2GB, 4GB and 8GB Fuzes go on sale next week and will be typically good value at £59, £79 and £99.

Interestingly, two topics Jan and I were keen to chew the fat on were streaming media and future player designs. Obviously I can't say too much about the latter (you'd be impressed) but on the former the company is putting its money where its mouth is following the purchase of MusicGremlin for an undisclosed price on Tuesday.

MusicGremlin is a company which specialises in content sharing and wireless access to it and we have a sneaky suspicion a worthy successor to the under appreciated Sansa Connect will be the first port of call.

We'll be watching SanDisk closely over the coming months. I suggest you do too...
