We don't care as yet, but that could change by 2009...

Microsoft has finally come clean and admitted that its so-far underwhelming Zune line of MP3 players will see a European launch next year.

Microsoft France executive François Ruault was the man to break ranks late last week when speaking to French newspaper Les Echos. Interestingly - though perhaps predictably - Ruault said the release will also likely correspond with the arrival of the Zune's third generation devices. A Windows Mobile 7 equipped Zune handset has been heavily tipped to be one of those models, but whether Microsoft is quite ready to go head-to-head with the monstrous Apple iPhone remains to be seen.

That said, Microsoft hasn't been shy of expanding the once lambasted brand having added smaller flash-based nano rivals in the shape of the Zune 8 and Zune 4 to the original HDD-based unit.

Ironically, Microsoft has also been very cautious with its Zune products saying it would only release them globally once it was fully convinced it had a first class line ready. To this end it appears to be staying true to its word having already announced one delay to 2008 and now this further extension.

Could this be third time lucky...
