MSI has been promising Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) motherboards for some time. Finally that pledge has been fulfilled and owners of MSI's P45D3 Platinum and P45 Platinum are now able to download an MSI's ClickBIOS EFI for those motherboards.

The use of EFI also enables pre-OS applications to be loaded, without the need for a Splashtop Linux style secondary operating system. And, because an EFI is written using high level programming languages, it's likely that many more of these programs will become available from third parties, enabling even greater access to core system functionality without the need to load a full OS.

Benefits of EFI over the traditional BIOS we all know and love include vastly improved graphics (EFI actually has some), mouse-controlled interaction, multi-language capability and, of course, as already mentioned, pre-OS apps. For those interested, it's worth noting 32-bit OS support is non-existent. Vista x64 support was added in Service Pack 1, which everyone surely has by now, right? A fresh install is required, so bear in mind a SP1-preloaded disc is required.
