Intel Lifts Curtain On Core 2 Duo Chipset

Intel’s much anticipated Core 2 Duo chipset is here and it looks like AMD could really be under the cosh now.



Formerly known as ‘Broadwater’, the new Viiv compatible P965 Express brings some important new technologies to the market. Key most among them is its support for a lightening quick 1066MHz frontside bus (FSB) while it can also handle dual channel 800MHz DDR2 SDRAM with Fast Memory Access (FMA), a system which optimises bandwidth. Furthermore the arrival of the P965 also sees the introduction of ‘Quiet System’ which – rather predictably – is designed to reduce noise and heat and thus make PCs more living room friendly without scaring the hell out of the cat.

On top of these newbies is a veritable who’s who of PC cutting edge connectivity with a PCI Express x16 slot, six SATA 3Gbps connectors, six PCI Express 1x slots, ten USB2.0 ports, high definition audio, RAID 0, 1, 5, and 10 support, Gigabit Ethernet LAN and, in the case of the G945 variant, a GMA X3000 integrated graphics core which is Direct X 9.0c, Shader Model 3.0 and OpenGL 1.5 compatible which will be capable of running Windows Vista in its full glory. A lower specified graphics core called the GMA 3000 will also be available targeting the business market.

There is much talk right now that Intel is about to reclaim the performance crown by some distance with its Core 2 Duo range, with the P965 Express chipset behind it, it’s already off to a good start.
