Abit’s motherboards could be getting a whole lot quieter thanks to a rather smart invention: the Silent OTES.

The Silent OTES is a cooler that expands upon the company’s existing OTES range (which already includes the OTES AeroFlow and Dual OTES) but differentiates itself by claiming to be completely silent. And by this it doesn’t mean low decibels, it means no decibels.

Ok, let’s break this down. “OTES” stands for Outside Thermal Exhaust System and the Silent OTES works to cool a motherboard’s notoriously noisy North Bridge via heatpipe technology which transfers the heat from it and then dissipates it onto the fins of the Collection Module (see below). From here, heat is exhausted outside the case by the air flowing from the CPU fan. This is rather clever in theory because what Abit is doing is using one fan to remove the need for another.

Critical to the whole system is the all copper base at the end of the heatpipe which comes into direct contact with the North Bridge. Copper is renowned for its thermal conductivity and the base screws on tightly to the North Bridge to ensure maximum possible contact for heat transfer.

Abit has been working on the design of the Silent OTES for more than eight months and it plans to announce details of the first motherboards to feature this technology in May. Whether Abit also plans to licence it out to other manufacturers or keep all this cooling goodness to itself remains to be seen.
