The SyncMaster 192T is a great looking monitor. Whereas a matt silver finish can sometimes look contrived or even cheap it works beautifully with this screen, and the dark highlights on the stand enhance the overall effect.

Like ViewSonic, Samsung has avoided excessive use of logos and model names to keep the design clean and pleasing to the eye. The result is a very thin bezel that frames the LCD panel without dwarfing its dimensions. Located on the bezel below the panel are the control buttons.

The main four controls are flanked on either side by the power button and an auto adjust button for setting the screen up when using an analogue connection. The adjustment controls comprise menu, exit, plus and minus buttons. The plus button will also activate quick access to the brightness, while the minus button brings up Samsung’s Magic Bright setting. Magic Bright, like all the similar features on other monitors gives you the option to switch between three levels of screen brightness. The three settings are named Text, Internet and Entertain and are supposed to represent the best environment for office work, Internet browsing and game playing. You also have the option of setting the screen brightness level manually, which I found produced the best overall results.

The stark contrast between this screen and the similarly sized Sony SDM –HS93 is quite staggering. Whereas the Sony’s image looks washed out and lacks any form of vivid colour representation, this Samsung exhibits a vibrant image full of rich colour and strong contrast. Colour purity and graduated colour scaling are both first rate on the SyncMaster 192T, but it’s the way the image is represented under general use that makes this screen such a joy to use. In fact I’d say that the image quality of the Samsung is second only to the staggeringly good ViewSonic VP211b.

Another similarity to the ViewSonic monitor is the superb viewing angle. No matter how acutely you try to view the screen the brightness of the image refuses to drop. Unfortunately you’re never going make the most of this feature since the screen has no side-to-side rotation. This problem is compounded by the fact that the commendably stable base clings to your desk surface like a limpet, making it almost impossible to twist the entire unit to one side or the other.

Other than the sideways rotation problem, the stand configuration is superb. Not only does the screen tilt forwards and backwards, but it also raises and lowers vertically. The range of movement is so good that the screen can actually lay flat on the base, allowing you to tidy the monitor away in a drawer if the need ever arose.
In a break from convention all the connectors are located in the base rather than at the back of the screen. This makes connecting your cables a simple procedure, although it also means that the SyncMaster 192T has to use an external power brick.
PC connection comes courtesy of an analogue D-SUB port and a DVI port for the preferable digital connection.

With all the connections in the base it makes sense that the screen can be laid flat against it. This means that the whole unit can be wall mounted, whereas most flat panels have to be removed from the base to perform such a feat. What’s truly impressive about this package is that Samsung has included the wall-mounting bracket in the box, complete with all the screws and wall plugs necessary to get the job done.

The Samsung SyncMaster 192T isn’t a perfect TFT display, but it comes pretty close. The image quality is superb and the design is fresh and pleasing to the eye. The lack of sideways rotation is rather disappointing considering the excellent viewing angle, and some people may find the external power supply annoying. On the whole though, if you’re in the market for a 19in flat panel display, this should be top of your list.

Verdict

An excellent 19in flat panel display with a stunning image and a wall mount solution in the box. There may be a couple of niggles and the price is high, but that’s not enough to take the shine off this first rate product.
