For those of you wooed by the Philips 21:9 Cinema TV you might be interested to know there's something even crazier out there...

NEC is the perpetrator of a monster known as the 'CRV43', a 42.8in curved display with crazy Double WXGA+ 2880 x 900 native resolution for "unmatched viewing experience". I'll have to question that though since surely 1080 vertical pixels is far more practical? Hmmmmn.

Other key specs for the CRV43 include a 10,000:1 contrast ratio, 200 cd.m2 brightness and rocket fast 0.02ms response time. The dynamic range is 12bit (4096 levels) while you'll get 100 per cent overage of the sRGB colour gamut. Inputs are via HDMI 1.3, a single DVI-D or USB 2.0 and it weighs less than I'd have expected at just 20kg.

Yes, in practical terms the CRV43 nestles somewhere between chocolate fire guards and Telfon shoe soles but it's also all kinds of impractical awesomeness.

NEC is selling this beautiful freak (Eels fans, see what I did there?) as we speak for $7,999 (circa £5,700) and in actual fact has been since May. Yep, it passed under our radar first time around but thanks to reader Jacek it now has our firm attention.

Would I buy one if I had the money? No, don't be ridiculous. Do I still love it against all rationale? Oh yes!

imagine this: a screen sphere, with dozens of these curved screen curved into a giant ball and a hole for you to poke your head through and actually be in the crysis world.

@ ilovethemonkeyhead - wouldn't it be easier (not to mention cheaper) to just use VR if you want the complete immersive gaming experience?

I'd rather wait for displays in glasses to get good, and fitted with an accelerometer that moves the rendering point of view to match yours, than wait for huge or spherical sc... more
