I'm not too sure I want to know how this would be useful...

Samsung has announced it will be rocketing past the usual 1.3/2MP token webcam fitted into most monitors with the announcement of a monstrous 5MP add-on to the 'Scopia VC240'.

The 24in display can consequently capture 720p HD video at a full 30fps and also supports V2oIP (Video and Voice over Internet Protocols) conferencing and H.264 compression. Noise cancelling is in there too so audio can be concentrated on that of the subject (as I said, I don't want to know what it will be used for).

The monitor itself is otherwise fairly standard fare with a typical 16:9 aspect ratio and resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. Samsung also quotes a 1,000:1 contrast ratio and 170 degree viewing angle.

The real shocker however is the price. Samsung says the Scopia VC240 will come with a recommended retail price of $1,999 (£1,434) which, quite frankly, could buy about five 24in monitors and five standalone 5MP webcams to go with them. As yet there is no shipping date or location (never and to Fantasy Island?).

Hmmmn, niche in the extreme?

@Gordon - pedantic point

Your £ conversion is a bit off. FX rate hasn't been as bad as that for a while now... It's still ruinously expensive mind!
