This one almost slipped through the net, but fans of DisplayLink will be glad we caught it just in time...

Acer has announced its entry into the USB connected monitor arena with the 'B223' - a 22in screen which does everything you thought it might, just with ultra simple connectivity. With this in mind there are few spec surprises with the B223, you get a 1680 x 1050 native resolution, a 5ms response time and a spare USB port which can be used to either chain another display or hook up a peripheral such as a keyboard or mouse.

Of course with all the simple boxes successfully checked the big concern switches to that old DisplayLink issue: price and once again there is unfortunately cause for concern. In the case of the B223 Acer has set a rather nasty 339 euro (£293) RRP and with identically sized standard displays available at around half this price it does suggestion anyone not looking for more than a basic dual LCD setup would be better off just buying a couple of these and a decent dual output graphics card.

Yep, much like SSD, DisplayLink is extremely desirable but it also remains prohibitively expensive at this time so all I can say at this point is: roll on the inevitable commoditisation during 2009...
