Samsung Unveils Widest Ever 23in Monitor

While the debate about 16:10 verses 16:9 monitors continues to rage Samsung has decided to spice things up ever further...

With the 16:9 23in (yes, another size to add to the list) '2342BWX' the giant-of-virtually-everything has produced a typical word first: the World's First QWXGA monitor.

Now for those struggling with their resolution acronyms (happens to me daily, even after all these years) QWXGA translates to 2048 x 1152 and for those with a typical 1680 x 1050 22in display I can sense you high fiving from here. Ideal for fitting two A4 pages side by side, giving Outlook some much needed breathing space or garnering that extra little bit of vertical height this is a resolution I could really get behind - apart from one thing: Samsung's reasoning behind it.

You see far from extolling these considerable virtues, the famous Korean family business is instead saying the 2342BWX was made with the inspiration that it would enable users to keep the Windows Vista sidebar in full view at all times. Yep, the same Windows Vista sidebar of which Microsoft has quickly backtracked and disabled by default from Windows 7. Oh dear.

That aside, we don't get any brightness, contrast ratio or response times for the 2342BWX and availability is initially only in Korea so the cautious among you may remain somewhat hesitant. For everyone else, the expected 399,000 won RRP (£192) shouldn't prove overly intimidating - though running Crysis Warhead might prove rather more of a challenge...
