Well barely three months since Fujitsu Siemens announced the World's first zero watt monitor the fast moving company has unveiled its first commercial variants.

The 20in 'P20W-5 ECO' and 22in 'P22W-5 ECO' hit all the bars you'd expect for their respective sizes (1680 x 1050 native resolutions, 5ms response times and HDMI connectivity) but do it without consuming a single watt of power when placed in standby. (You didn't honestly think 'zero watt' referred to the monitors in use did you?!).


As for the tech behind them everything is surprisingly simple: a kill switch completely shuts down the monitor based on the connected PC also switching off and then reacts to the PC starting up making the monitor turn on. That's why you can't see a power button...

Savings? Based on eight hours use daily and 16 hours in standby FS calculates a measly £6 per year (still, it's enough to splash out on a few pints a Third World donation).

Fujitsu Siemens will follow up the P20W-5 ECO and P22W-5 ECO with 24in and 26in models in September and the technology is likely to become standard before too long (HDTVs, printers, projectors and digiboxes next please!). As for the present, both 20in and 22 inchers will launch this month, the former at the hefty price premium of £328. That's a lot of £6s, better cancel that aid packet...

Admittadly it is just a 4-plug (power brick?) with a master connection (did that make sense?), which most of us probably already have.
