The Acer Predator Gaming PC is one extreme rig - even if recently outgunned by Asus' monolith ARES CG6155 - so it needs a monitor of suitable madness to stand beside it and boy, has it found one...

The 'G24' (yep, no Predator/Monster/Animal/mineral or vegetable branding here) is a 24in LCD which Acer claims will sport a mind-bending 50,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. For those with good memories that's 5x the previous high boasted by LG's W2252TQ and a darn sight higher than most HDTVs.

Of course I can't let such a claim go by without pointing out the horribly ambiguous nature of contrast ratio scoring. There is no set industry standard, dynamic is not the same as static and allows for greater manipulation of the numbers and it isn't stated whether this is a grey-to-grey or colour figure (with the former easier to achieve it is almost certain to be that). On the other hand, it is a huge amount so we'll be keen to get it into the office for testing.

Aside from this headline feature, the G24 ticks all relevant boxes for its size: the 1920 x 1200 'Full HD' capable native resolution, a rapid 2ms response time, high 400 nits brightness, the pre-requisite proprietary technology (in this case Acer's 'CrystalBrite' colour enhancement system) and the option of HDMI connectivity.

Price and date remain typically shrouded in mystery but expect a healthy premium over most 24 inchers and not too long to wait. So who's ready for 100,000:1? 1,000,000:1...?

Even if it is dynamic contrast then if 400 is the brightest it'll go then 0.008cd/m² must be the lowest, which is rather unbelievable (a good LCD now can get down to about 0.0... more

I used one of these at the Predator launch event and it seemed nice enough - although I wouldn't take that as a definitive review.
