Fujitsu wasn't meant to be all out of this...

Still, despite a supposed exit from the display sector by March 2008, the company's conglomerate Fujitsu Siemens is kicking hard and this week has come up with something rather ingenious: the world's first "zero watt" monitor.

Of course this amount (or lack of) doesn't respond to the LCD in use, but to its power draw while on standby. The tech behind it is rather clever too since the prototype contains an integrated switch which kills the display completely once the signal from the PC disappears (ie, you switch it off). Upon restarting the PC the switch sparks into life and turns the monitor back on. It's so simple you'd have to question why no one came up with it before...?!

Fujitsu Siemens says the mostly likely time for this tech to hit the market is during the summer and it shouldn't add much, if any, price premium to the models. Sadly FS didn't say whether it will be licensing this breakthrough to other companies or if it will/can be applied to other types of product (TVs would be a biggie). That said, expect businesses to be all over this upon release.

Isn't it great when you can cuddle trees, french kiss koalas and simultaneously fatten your wallet...
