There is an argument that most mobile screens are actually already sharper than your average HDTV (pixels per inch my dear fellow) but that hasn't stopped NEC pulling this out the bag...

The catchily named 'NL9654HL06-01J' may not roll off the tongue, but its native 960 x 540 pixel resolution certainly has us salivating. The QHD (Quarter HD) panel measures just 2.7 inches (making it ideal for camcorders/smartphones) and is even compatible with Full HD (1920 x 1080) content.

If that isn't enough, the NL965...'s 413 pixels per inch are the highest yet seen in the industry and with a wide colour gamut of 70 per cent (NTSC ratio) and a luminance of 300 candelas per square meter (cd/m2) this certainly isn't a one trick pony.

Interestingly, NEC primarily describes the NL96... as ideal for professional camcorders since highly accurate focus adjustment could be made using the viewfinder alone, though I have to say - depending on energy requirements - it could also be a massive hit in the latest PMPs and smartphones.

Funnily enough, such a resolution would actually introduce the problem of upscaling standard definition content for small screens - a head spinning idea just a few years back - and storage limitations, but we'll worry about this when the situation arises.

The NL9... is shipping to manufacturers now so we'll see what ideas they come up with for this wonder display before the end of the year...
