It's almost here...

Dell has finally made comment on its much anticipated luxury 22in LCD - the 'Crystal', then immediately backtracked.

In a strange turn of events, the multinational PC maker put out a release entitled "DELL MAKES CLEAR STATEMENT ON STYLE AND INNOVATION WITH CRYSTAL WIDESCREEN FLAT PANEL MONITOR" and declared:

"Technophiles with an eye for beautiful design now have a clear choice in widescreen flat panel monitors - the Dell Crystal. The award-winning 22-inch LCD display, crafted from four millimeter ultra-clear tempered glass, offers an ingenious fusion of art, technology, sleek form and sophisticated function. Priced at $1,199, Crystal is available at www.dell.com/crystal."

Minutes later the release and the Crystal site went offline.

Still, premature or not, we now know what's what. The Crystal will have a typical WSXGA+ 1680 x 1050 native resolution (using TrueColor Technology for 98 per cent colour gamut coverage), a 2ms grey-to-grey response time, 2000:1 contrast ratio, integrated 2MP webcam with microphone, USB, DVI/HDMI connectivity with HDCP and four way speakers with a port to connect a sub-woofer. Then, of course, there's the utterly drool-worthy design...

Sadly that monstrous $1,199 (£600) price tag is something of a millstone - especially since it's UK mark-up is likely to put it closer to £1,000, but (as most men will know) picking up a pretty face generally requires some financial pain...

Update: The official site is back and we can add HDMI challenger DisplayPort to the connectivity mix. Even better news: the Crystal goes on sale immediately in the US so expect it sooner rather than later on our side of the pond.

Here's an updated snap...
