A little leisure news here as you limber up for Saturday’s regular dose of Premiership football…

Ubiquitous monitor, projector and digital camera maker BenQ is the latest IT company to use our national sport to boost its global brand having agreed to sponsor the 2008 European Championships.

Deemed the third largest sporting event on the globe with an incredible 7.9bn TV viewing during the final tournament in 2004, the Euros are likely to do for BenQ what Man U did for Vodafone, Arsenal for O2, Chelsea for Samsung, Fulham for Pipex and LG, Reading for Kyocera and well… you get the picture.

“The sponsorship supports BenQ’s commitment to Europe and ongoing efforts to make BenQ a household name in the region,” said K. Y. Lee, BenQ’s head honcho. “The UEFA European Football Championship is one of the most prestigious and recognizable sporting brands in the world. It has a heritage and legacy with football fans of all ages for the quality of the football and the enjoyment the tournament brings to fans around the world.”

Amen!

Euro 2008 is co-hosted by Austria and Switzerland and the opening match kicks off in Basle on 7 June, 2008. Personally, I can’t wait but right now I think the England team needs all the preparatory time it can get…
