Where October left off November is continuing as the flood of Android news doesn't look set to stop any time soon...

Following last month's unveiling of Samsung Spica, not to mention Android 2.0 is Motorola giving an European update on the Droid. Much like the confusing rebranding strategy that accompanied the Dext ('Cliq' in the US), Droid will be known as ‘Milestone' in Europe.

This is a brassy tag, but given what is on offer it is not hard to see why Motorola is feeling so cocky. Central to this is Android 2.0 integration which brings a flood of new functionality, including Facebook contacts integration, a revamped look and layers to Google Maps (though not Google Maps Navigation which is currently US only). That said, the hardware itself also deserves a mention. The Milestone sports a huge 3.7in 854 x 480 capacitive touchscreen, 3G, WiFi, GPS, a five megapixel camera, 3.5mm headphone jack and microUSB charging. It is also purportedly the slimmest Qwerty slider on the market at just 13mm making it thinner than the iPhone 3G/3GS at its widest point.

Equally tantalising is the Milestone will come with multi-touch functionality (at least in Europe) as well as official Google branding. This last part is significant because up until this point Google has stripped its logo from any handset which looked to implement it (notably the HTC Hero), suggesting the dam may now have broken.

We've still awaiting news of an official UK carrier(s) for the Motorola Milestone, but it is believed O2 (which has the handset in several European countries) may not pick it up in here. That said, it seems all credible consumer friendly, high-end smartphones pack iPhone-esque wallet busting tariffs these days so don't expect to get off too lightly whoever wins out.
