Looks like Steve Jobs' continual assertions that the iPhone and iPod touch (not iTouch please!) are serious gaming platforms is gathering credence today with news both Tekken and Rock Band are targeting to mobile OS.

The former isn't official as yet with Namco guru Jonathan Kromray telling the Washington Post: "It's about being able to get the game mechanics right. If we can take Tekken and make it really fun to play on the iPhone, then we will. We do have a back cataloge of Japanese games that we're working on, as well as some new IP."

As for Rock Band, while I'll admit pretend instruments games baffle me somewhat as a moderately untalented guitarist, it should also cause waves with an iPhone OS launch imminent. Guitar, bass, drums and vocals will all make it across and PocketGamer has managed to scoop a pre-release hands-on and came away impressed.

Furthermore, developer Harmonix is looking to add Bluetooth and co-operative online multiplayer modes as well as make regular updates available with new downloadable content and tracks. Watch out Tap Tap Revenge 3...

In related news Apple has slid out a minor firmware update for the iPhone and iPod touch. Version 3.1.2 is primarily "bug fixes and improvements" and lists the following three major changes:

  • Resolves sporadic issue that may cause iPhone to not wake from sleep
  • Resolves intermittent issue that may interrupt cellular network services until restart
  • Fixes bug that could cause occasional crash during video streaming
The 241.7MB download is available now and hopefully won't bring with it a rash of new problems...

"bug fixes and improvements" I'm guessing one of those is to block syncing with the Pre again.

Unfortunately since the upgrade, I now get regular unexpected quits from the iPhone mail app when trying to send messages on my 2G iPhone.
