Excellent news!
Is the 3.5mm audio jack the most enduring socket of all time? Other than power sockets, obviously.

Finally. My iPod is my primary music device but occasionally that dies while im on the move, yet I REFUSE to carry around either an adapter or a second pair of headphones. Now I will be able to just plug my main headphones into what ever i need no fuss

So... with 3.5mm taking up the same hight on a PCB as miniUSB, they need never have introduced microUSB!
And all my miniUSB-equipped things wouldn't feel like they were on death row...
It was becoming standardised by itself, damnit! :¬( Grrrr...

would still like to see a 6.5 mm jack on something portable... like an amp, maybe?

A 6.3mm jack will be more useful than a 6.5...

Hingy / ilovethemonkeyhead - while on the subject, I've always wondered what the point in the 6.3mm is?
Is it just for the extra physical strength on devices that are likely to be moved with force? (eg. guitar, big headphones connected to a device that is not in my pocket etc.)
Other than that, I'd be happy for all of my devices with 6.3mm jacks to be replaced over time with 3.5mm, it would save me having to buy adapters, and I could pack things in tighter to my A/V cabinet....

Looks like I won't to jack it in after all in the future when I see nice phones with propriety kit.

HTC has also indicated that they will be using MicroUSB for data and charging and a 3,5 mm headphone jack for audio on their future phones. You can read about that here: http://tweakers.net/nieuws/62956/toekomstige-htcs-krijgen-geen-extusb-aansluiting-meer.html It's in Dutch though, so you'll probably have to grab a translator.
