Crazy Chinese company In Technology has this week officially unveiled the 'xpPhone' which dumps traditional mobile OSes in favour of a full desktop platform. Aiming to come as close to a laptop/tablet experience as possible with the venerable (if ageing OS), the company has created a device with a strange combination of premium and low end components.
The highlight is a mammoth 4.8in 800 x 400 pixel display (no, we don't know if it is capacitive or resistive), a choice of 1GB or 512MB of RAM and SSD or HDD storage options ranging up to 64GB and 120GB respectively. Strangely, In Technology doesn't elaborate on the chipset inside the xpPhone, but does reveal an AMD Super Mobile CPU will power it.
HSDPA, WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS all make an appearance however along with the strange choice of a VGA out port (HDMI surely?!), USB for charging and synchronisation and a strangely low end 1.3 megapixel camera. As the pictures show, you'll also get an extremely large sliding Qwerty keypad - the first we've ever seen with a dedicated number pad.
In Technology doesn't reveal the dimensions of the xpPhone, but at a whopping 400g you probably don't want to know. Battery life is also an issue since it is quoted at just seven hours, less than you'll get from some netbooks. 12 hours can be attained with the "optional large battery", but I dread to think how heavy that will make it!
At present no shipping or pricing information is available, but you can register your interest on the In Technology site. More proof of concept demo model than real world consumer product, the very existence of the xpPhone is somewhat baffling. Then again, it's far more interesting than the vast majority of incremental upgrade models typically doing the rounds. Will it hit the UK? Other than via grey import I'd suggest it has about the same chance as your average feline being seen exiting the gates of Hell.
