EC Roaming Call & SMS Cuts Kick In

The previously announced roaming call cuts step up a notch today...
The European Commission has confirmed new caps came into effect across all 27 member nations yesterday and sees the cost of making a call drop to a maximum of 43 euro cents per minute from 46 euro cents. Receiving calls also drops from a maximum of 22 euro cents to 19 euro cents.

Yes, these aren't great changes but they are part of an ongoing annual process which aims to trim down the cost each year. Text messages will also be reduced to a maximum of just 11 cents which makes them little more expensive than sending from home. Note all prices exclude tax.
Furthermore, and perhaps more importantly than the price cuts themselves, is now European operators must bill their customer calls by the second not the nearest minute - something which should add up to a significant saving over the time of a holiday or extended business trip.
"From today, all Europeans making calls or sending texts with their mobiles can experience the EU's single market without borders. The roaming-rip off is now coming to an end," stated EU Telecoms Commissioner Viviane Reding (pictured). "I call on the mobile industry to pass these savings on to data roaming customers swiftly."
Well, it's a start...
