There's supposed to be lots of glamour, suspicion and lauding of launch dates for new products these days then again sometimes a company just dumps them out on an updated product page...

This was the less showbiz approach chosen by Vodafone late last week to tell us we'll be able to get our mitts on the UK's second Android phone on 5 May.

The HTC Magic is now available for pre-order and will be reasonably priced going free on contracts from £30pm (on 18 month terms) though £25pm had been expected as the sweet spot. As for the specs they make for fractionally better reading than the Qwerty equipped T-Mobile G1 with a 528MHz CPU, 3.2in 320 x 480 pixel display, GPS, 3.2MP camera, HSDPA, WiFi, Bluetooth with EDR, accelerometer and microSD card slot but they aren't exactly blowing us away.

That said, neither has Android of late though the much hyped Cupcake update should spice things up a bit even if this doesn't look likely to spark a raft of new Google OS based devices.

That time should be circa Q3/Q4 and though before then we should have the Palm Pre and a third generation iPhone(s) so you may want to hold tight for now.

hmm ok, I could have sworn the G1 was VGA... seems like such a waste of potential, but then again isn't that what everyone's been saying about Android so far?

@ aj232. I wouldn't pay any attention to the listed prices on any network. I would bet my handset you could get this for less than £30 a month by asking nicely. O2 will even... more
