With apparently huge numbers of iPhone users actually signing up to be developers just to get their hands on iPhone OS 3.0 beta firmware this should please a great many fanboys...

Apple has rolled out the third iteration of 'OS 3.0' today to developers and while it kept the details of any changes to itself, some light digging reveals mostly performance and stability improvements.

Boring as this may sound, OS 3.0 has been as quick as a turtle in treacle up to this point (further building hype about a more powerful third generation iPhone) so it is highly welcome. On top of this I'm hearing that Spotlight searches can now be saved for quick access, MMS is fully functional (though country/carrier dependent) and core apps that had become rather unstable (Google Maps, YouTube) are back in the game again.

Against this, beta 2 apparently allowed iPhone Skype to work over a 3G network - a truly breakthrough development - but it looks like beta 3 has curtailed this. There's also no sign yet of the video recording functionality spied earlier this month which further suggests it could be a new model only feature.

Qualified parties head on over to the iPhone Dev Center now, everyone else: to the torrents!
