Hmmmn, what do we have here? A new iPhone, perhaps?

As usual Mac Rumours has done its firmware code digging (guys I salute you for your painstaking doggedness in always keeping this up) and unearthed a rather interesting phrase: 'iPhone2,1'.

Referenced for the very first time by Apple in its new firmware 2.2.1 update, the term is potentially very significant since the iPhone 3G is always referred to as 'iPhone1,2' a clear indication of its status as an incremental upgrade. Whatever this is on the other hand, clearly it's a genuine evolution.

How solid is this? Well, the same system revealed the 2G iPod touch and the iPhone 3G so it's pretty solid - even if it doesn't give anything specific away.

What to expect? Well, a June/July announcement seems painfully obvious given Apple's past form and the similar launch timeframe for stunning, potential lawsuit magnet, the Palm Pre.

Now it would be daft to speculate on hardware and software features but I'm just daft enough. Obvious points are a better camera (surely a cert), video recording, multi-tasking and copy & paste. Also expect incrementally better battery life, full blooded Bluetooth and a more powerful CPU - possibly made by recent purchase Imagination Technologies. In addition I wouldn't be surprised if Apple went back to calling this the 'iPhone' as clearly every iPhone from now on is going to feature 3G - that is unless it keeps on the iPhone 3G as a midrange offering...

Right, that's enough on this because give it three or four months and speculation will be rampant and I'm only now just getting over the horrendous rumour mongering last time around...

Update: The iPhone2,1 term has also turned up on PinchMedia ad serving reports. The plot thickens.

I look forward to the day we get our hands on OLED-touting "iPhone X" handsets, a day when 3G speeds wouldn't become subject to endless lawsuits, and an inbuit camer... more

Even with a new model, I don't think Apple will ever reach the level of quality shown by those Windows Mobile 6.5 screenshots posted here.
