It's been one heck of a long time coming but it seems an iPhone 3G software unlock is finally on its way...

Naturally enough it is those perennial pains in Apple's posterior the Dev-Team which is proclaiming the breakthrough stating its 3G unlock (wonderfully codenamed 'yellowsn0w') has now been completed and is being packaged into a user friendly UI in time for release on New Year's Eve.

There do seem a couple of red flags however with the Dev-Team explaining that all those chomping at the bit for network freedom will need to have the 2.11.07 baseband or earlier and also have already jailbroken your phones.

Naturally all this joyous news doesn't change the fundamental stumbling point of having to pay £342.50 for an 8GB or £391.45 for a 16GB model (got to love the messy figures the VAT cut brought) but then again as someone who just had his iPhone 3G swiped on his birthday (yep, I'm calling in the sympathy vote) it's a stumbling point I can associate with.

Watch this space...

In related news Once esteemed iPhone unlocker Zibri, creator of the impressive ZiPhone app, has called it quits citing long overdue family time. He boasts to have developed an iPhone 3G unlock but claims "It's not safe to release such a thing believe me (copyright issues)". The ZiPhone domain is also being placed up for sale in early 2009.

Any takers among the Dev Team?!
