If there's any UK network that should be in a prime position to learn from the iPhone App Store explosion it is O2...

Consequently it isn't the greatest surprise to see the music loving telco announcing its own mobile applications portal: 'Litmus'. Descrived as a "community project dedicated to finding and nurturing the very best new mobile, wireless and internet-enabled applications and services" it is essentially a place where developers can place their wares and consumers can download them.

Both free, trial and priced apps are already showing on Litmus and like any site hoping to make a mark in this increasingly competitive sector it features application ratings, descriptions, instructions and installation guides as well as a list of supported handsets for each app. And no, the iPhone isn't part of this - Apple, doesn't share remember!

Platforms that are supported however are Windows Mobile, Symbian, Java ME, Flash Mobile, BlackBerry, Linux and Unix which apps are broken down into the categories: Communications, Education, Games, GPS, Multimedia, Utilities and Various. Caveats? Well, understandably you do need to be an O2 customer to enjoy Litmus but developers are provided with a free pre-pay sim to get them started.

Can Litmus pass the test? It's too early to tell - but the market certainly won't be worse off for the competition...
