While the N97 has done a rather good job of winning hearts and minds today we've long argued the true winner is software - so Nokia has also given that a spit and polish...

Firstly the Finns have produced a major upgrade to all their handsets messaging abilities with the launch of 'Nokia Messaging', a service which will support IM and email accounts from most ISPs globally as well as Yahoo! Mail and Yahoo! Messenger, Windows Live Hotmail, Gmail and Google Talk and AOL Mail.

An online portal for Mail is also being introduced which provides users with 1GB of storage to create and access Ovi email accounts and services using a single sign on.

Secondly Nokia Maps is taking a significant step forward with the addition of 3D landmarks for 216 cities, high resolution aerial images and terrain maps plus a new route overview during routing and during Drive allowing purchasable turn-by-turn car navigation guidance. In addition Nokia Maps will more easily sync between PC and handset to enable more extensive pre-planning of long journeys.

On top of this there's instant access to real time information such as camera alerts, safety spots and traffic information for selected countries, walking directions and 'Wcities' event guides (real-time information for events and movies) in over 450 destinations.

Nokia isn't hanging about with all these improvements either with beta versions of Mail on Ovi and the new Nokia Maps rolling out this month and Nokia Messaging arriving in Q1 2009. 'Tis a good day to be a Nokia user...
