HTC has so far been leading the way with Android handset manufacturing (a total of one model, to be fair) but it seems fellow rebrander and top manufacturer in its own right Asus is also keen on the idea...

The news comes from the suitably Far Eastern-based Digitimes and claims Asus "plans to launch its first Android-based Google phone in the first half of 2009, according to company sources".

The report also goes on to say that while Asus may initially take the lead role by producing the handset under its own brand, a slew of customised models are then expected to be created for overseas clients which makes us think of the good old (financially beleaguered) UK.

Now given the mostly positive response given the first Android phone - certainly my T-Mobile G1 First Impressions were generally good, even if publications are going a little OTT in their praise - it is bizarre that rival companies are being so comparatively quiet/secretive. After all, the G1 is an easily bested peace of hardware and you'd think a few mouth watering teasers with Touch HD-style devices would be all it takes to encourage people to save a little longer in this economically challenging time...

Then again what do I know?

Oh yes. Everything!
