Could we be looking at the first true 'camperaphone'?

Yes, am much as the megapixels rush up the fact is so-called cameraphones have yet to match dedicated compacts which is where Casio's 'W63CA' fits in. Boasting to be the world's first 8.1 megapixel cameraphone (that's a whole 0.1 over the opposition) the real claim to fame of this twisty clamshell is that Casio says it will use the same engine as in its highly regarded Exilm camera line.

Consequently with the W63CA we get nine-point autofocus, face detection, anti-shake 6-axis vibration compensation, a 28mm equivalent lens, (unspecified) flash and potentially the best snaps from a mobile phone to date. The usual VGA video recording at 30fps makes it aboard too.

Almost as hot as the camera tech, the W63CA also packs in a 3.1in 480 x 800 resolution OLED display for real Wow Factor and while all this does result in fairly portly dimensions of 110 x 50 x 22mm it is expected to weigh a very reasonable 124g.

The bad news? Japan is the first recipient of the W63CA and Casio hasn't hinted at a global release time frame. That said, with a spec this hot surely this has to be a matter of When and not If...?

Well, shut my mouth: it does have Bluetooth for music playback and short-range gaming; but it is CDMA, so not for Europe.
