A lot is going on this week so let's jump straight in...

iPhone firmware 2.2 is now out in beta (meaning we now know what's inside) and the most significant addition is something no-one was clamouring for: Google Street View. Something which has only just been added to London (and virtually nowhere else in the UK), it lets users see street level images of various places on their Google Maps to further help with orientation.

Potentially far more interesting to UK dwellers however is the addition of walking directions (praise be!) and public transport information and route maps - top stuff, though we await the extent of non-US support. Line-in audio is also now supported via the SDK which could lead to some very interesting third party apps. Cut and paste? MMS? Video recording? Don't be silly, why would Apple wish to silence its detractors?! *Yes, that's irony*

Next up is another funky Google addition: Google Earth is now available via the App Store. With tilting, panning and 3D mapping supported along with geo-located Wikipedia articles, integrated city, place and business searches and the ability to pinpoint and circle your current location expect it to go straight to number one in the App Store list. Best of all, this being Google, it's free.

Lastly, it is get your hopes up time with news that the ever committed iPhone Dev Team has managed to at last break the baseband processor on the iPhone 3G. This is a vital step since it gives them access to the heart of the handset's hardware and was the critical development in unlocking the original model. In theory, that elusive unlock should now be close.

So which are you most excited about...?

I find it difficult to believe *no one* is clamouring for Street View in the UK. Judging from comments left at other blogs, there must surely be a few UK citizens anticipating it. ... more
