@Tim - couldn't disagree more (apart from the bit about the bundled headphone - horrible, just horrible!).
The iPhone has gotten where it has for a reason, as all successful products do. Marketing can pull the wool over people's eyes for one product generation, but not more.

I'm not so sure about that Gordon, Casualty's been on TV for years..
I actually like the iPhone, just not enough to buy one. I dislike the way Apple and people who own Apple products position themselves as having made some sort of lifestyle choice by owning a pretty looking piece of technology.. the smugness of it all grates, particularly when it's so misplaced in terms of how the devices perform.
I feel much the same about the Prius, which I note can now be purchased with an iPhone dock. And probably a bag of organic tofu.

@Tim - apples and oranges (much as I love it as an analogy!)
To be fair, your issue then is (ironically) marketing and in particular how Apple markets itself. I can relate, it's a love it/hate it approach and I've often said I wish any other company had come up with the iPhone as we'd have 4/5 different hardware options by now to go with that stunning UI and it would be on multiple networks as well as being far more open to other codecs, syncing options, etc.
Of course the flaw in this argument is no-one other than Apple WAS able to come up with the iPhone when it did and companies are still struggling to get anywhere close now. The same could be said about the now endless imitations of App Store. Hard as it may be to swallow Apple seemingly has the jump on innovation and we then wait for others to make less totalitarian alternatives that don't completely suck.
Of course we NEED rivals to catch up though because without decent competition there is no choice and - pre getting my hands on a BlackBerry Storm - there is still no touchscreen based handset which comes close to the iPhone experience. Very sad, but true.

It's not about the pretty piece of technology, it's about how it all works together so damn well. The hardware/software integration in each individual Apple product is one thing. An iPhone, a few Macs and MobileMe all working together is something else altogether. It IS a lifestyle choice of sorts.
Apple's performance as a company in recent years is quite astounding. They're obviously doing something right.

I agree with both Tim and Gorden. I really do like apple products, and think in a number of areas they really do excel amazingly. However, as Gordon points out, Apple’s closed approach can become a real negative point at times. Even worse is that I have a number of friends who love Apple beyond the products themselves and as Tim pointed out, they really do see owning an Apple product as a reflection of how ‘cool’ their lifestyle is. I totally admit that my text purchase will be a MacBook, having said that it’s SO creepy to see Apple owners gleam at their products as if they forged them through their own personal hard work. Still hats off to Apple’s marketing, though I wonder if it will becomes their undoing?

yes I've used computers since the TRS-80 first intel PC I used was a 386-33mhz system. Upgrading for years building my own systems until 2001 then switched to apple at home - have to use windows at work.... Yes I'm McBrainwashed....
Maybe I've see the light and GOD has saved me.

Here we go...another mac / no mac argument.
Here's a thing...When Microsoft produce a closed o/s it's a "bad" thing and Linux is the darling of the people...when Apple do it, it's the best thing since sliced bread!
What was that about marketing!

Great, over-priced mediocre conformity triumphs. I'm going to go and live in a cave till all this is over.
There was a guy next to me on the train this morning watching a grainy rip of Jeremy Kyle on his iPhone, through the bundled headphones. I was convinced right there and then that the Cylons had the right idea about us.
