We've heard the rumours, seen the launch, had a fiddle but the T-Mobile G1 still has one last surprise up its sleeve: an early release date!

Oh yes my open source loving amigos, far from its mooted mid/late November release the Android based G1 will actually start going on sale in the UK from 30 October. This is probably a good thing too since the telco has revealed more than 25,000 consumers have so far signed up for the handset from our little Isle alone.

I've already given you my G1 first impressions so we'll keep this short, but for the (somehow) uninitiated the smartphone is built by HTC, rather reminiscent of its TyTN line, offers 7.2Mbit HSDPA, a 3.2MP fixed focus camera, integrated Gmail and Google Maps, POP3 and IMAP email support (though not Exchange) and sports both a responsive touchscreen and full Qwerty keyboard.

Sizeable holes at this stage include no Exchange support, no desktop syncing (stunner that), no video recording, no native multimedia playback and no copy and paste. Happily however with an open source approach and restriction free app store ('Android Market') these can all be fixed fairly quickly.

Available from free on a £40pm Combi or Flext contract, the G1 looks like it could be one of the Christmas hits of the year... given we won't even see the true potential of Android for another 12 months, that's some exciting start...
