The ever evolving BBC iPlayer has taken another step forward today as it has finally broken its sole mobile phone allegiance with the Apple iPhone...

Joining it will be new found compatibility for the newly launched Nokia N96 (way to make that monstrous RRP feel better). The purpose built service will officially arrive on 1 October and will be available to UK users over both 3G and WiFi connections. Keeping its end up too, Nokia has confirmed it will not look to charge customers to use it.


"Over the past eight months we have worked tirelessly to ensure BBC iPlayer is available on as many platforms as possible, from the PC and TV to games consoles and mobiles," said Erik Huggers, BBC Director of Future Media and Technology, in a statement. "This partnership is critical to ensuring we continue to reach out to audiences wherever they are and allow them to catch-up on their favourite BBC programmes."

Nokia UK MD Simon Ainslie, was also naturally buoyant adding: "The Nokia N96 is going to provide a gateway to quality viewing on the move. The enormous success of iPlayer has demonstrated the desire audiences have for accessing programmes at a time and a place that suits them."

Of course the bigger question is: now the N96 has iPlayer, how soon before the rest of the similarly equipped and OS-based N series follows suit... surely it can't be long now.

I think, due to the intense sensitivity of the issue, we should refrain from reporting and discussing the BBC iPlayer.

Its just not fair on those of use who aren... more

Has anyone heard of the iPlayer being put onto a Freeplay HDD? That would be a very tasty combination.

I think the reason the N96 gets the Iplayer is due to compatibility with DRM files along with hardware ... more

Shame if its note supported on the N95, iPlayer on the go sounds great!
