iPhones Hit Best Buy, Retail Store Precedent Set?

Are the reins at last coming off?
American mega-chain Best Buy has just been confirmed as a major new outlet for Apple's iPhone 3G. More than 1,000 Best Buy stores will take stock of the so-called Jesus phone which will go on sale from 7 September. How much stock? Shawn Score, President of Best Buy's mobile division, was predictably vague (if simultaneously smug) stating "We think we'll have a good supply for our customers."

Now before you get too excited: these are all contract handsets, no unlocked or PAYG models - at least at this stage. On the other hand, Radio Shack is also expected to be awarded a contract (potentially not until after Christmas) so these may be the first signs Apple is prepared to loosen its despotic grip on where iPhones can be picked up.
Any caveats? Well, Best Buy in particular already has a deal in place to sell Macs - but that wouldn't exclude the likes of PC World, John Lewis etc around the UK so fingers crossed.

In related news US news channel CBS is reporting Apple's main R&D building in Cupertino caught fire last night.
A whopping 66 fire fighters were needed to control the blaze which is claimed to have begun under an air conditioning unit. No injuries have been reported and the extent of the damage is so far unknown though feel free to speculate on what might have been lost... (new iPod touch/MacBook Air/cure for cancer/x-ray vision...).
Personally I suggest authorities thoroughly check the CCTV footage to see if a dark windowed car with Redmond licence plates was fleeing the scene...
