Motorola Preps Its Own iPhone Clone

The Motorola Alexander which was spied last week was meant to be the company's last hurrah before a potential sale of its handset division but it looks like there's one last trick up its sleeve...

The Motorola 'Atila' (ahhhh, I get the [ambitious] World Conqueror theme - even if there are two t's in Attila the Hun) is essentially a Qwerty keyboard-less version of the Alexander (think HTC Touch Diamond and Touch Pro).

Consequently, like the Alexander there's HSDPA (7.2Mbit no less with 1.8Mbps HSUPA), WiFi (b/g), a 2.8in QVGA display, powerful 1130mAh battery and that usual sigh also known as Windows Mobile 6.1. Unlike HTC it seems Motorola hasn't bothered to do any nifty interface customisation here so this really could be a deal breaker for some.

Furthermore at 109 x 80 x 13.75mm the Atila is chunkier than its obvious Apple-inspired rival but it should do the iPhone on the as yet unknown camera (though doesn't everyone?) while GPS must surely be there if Motorola has any hopes for this handset at all. Given the Qualcomm 7201A chipset at the Atila's heart however that should be on the cards.

No indications for the Atila's release date have yet arisen but Motorola knows urgency is definitely key before that spin-off becomes a fire sale...

If that's a picture of the Atila, why is it running WM6 Standard? (note the lack of Start menu in the top left, and the status icons at the edge of the top bar.)
