While few would disagree firmware 2.0 marked a quantum leap for the iPhone it did have that rushed feeling about it, something Apple now promises is fixed...

Firmware 2.0.1 touched down this morning and at a hefty 250MB (it won't waste that space on your handset) it comes with the claim of bug fixes and performance improvements galore.

Early reports include much reduced virtual keyboard and contacts lag and a snappier OS all round while applications are said to run with more stability and install quicker through iTunes. I'm also hearing reports of faster iPhone backups (once the first post-upgrade backup is done) as well.

Sadly however it looks like new features (including the infamous copy and paste, turn-by-turn GPS voicing, etc) are a bust but let us know if you spot anything incremental. Needless to say the Pwnage unlock tool has itself been pwned by this update.

Oh and iPod touch users (wow, I'm treating you as badly as Apple) - this update is free for you too...

In related news ever innovative peripherals site USBFever has started sales of a hardware unlock tool for the iPhone 3G and like its previous systems simply requires the careful trimming of your SIM card. Whether the unlock is hindered by firmware 2.0.1 we'll try and find out but with a 20 August ship date we'd seriously hope not.

Update: We've had it confirmed the sim unlock is only compatible with firmware 2.0 at present so beware. A 2.01 compatible version is imminent apparently.

The question is, do I believe the iPhone Dev Team's suggestion that my unlock should survive the upgrade?

@Gordon, of course, it's just a simple thing really. Apple just seem to be fantastic at all of this great technology, but they often miss the simple things that make people go... more

I would expect the various SIM unlockers to survive any and all updates because they are handset-independent and don't just exploit a (pluggable) iPhone hole.
