When Dell dropped its naff range of 'Pocket DJ' and 'DJ Ditty' MP3 players few thought they'd be back. When Dell dropped its PDA range even less predicted a return, so ehhhhhh?

Firstly, according to the increasingly hit and miss Wall Street Journal, a company insider (who else?) has told the paper the PC shifter has designs on re-entering the high volume, low profit, mug's game of MP3 players.

Apparently Dell will (presumably rebrand) small flash based units that utilise iPod Click Wheel-esque navigation, WiFi and will tie in with an 'online download service' in what looks to be an effort to cash-in on the iTunes WiFi model Apple employs so successfully. The new players will apparently cost under £50 and launch first in the US.

As for those equally ill-fated PDAs, Michael Dell still carries a touch for them too as he has hinted in an interview with GigaOM that the company is "working on" a relationship with Android and Symbian that could lead to a product but cannot "publicly disclose" details yet. He also warned "not to expect anything any time soon".

Is interest in these infamously difficult product categories wise? I'm inclined to think not, but - then again - Dell does have a history of dabbling in crazy ideas and then sinking them without trace...
